What is Venous Duplex?

Bonita Springs Venous Duplex Exam

Our most frequently requested exam is our Bonita Springs venous duplex exam, due to patients experiencing swollen legs soon after a car/plane ride or post-op from general or orthopedic surgery.  Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is an emergency consideration and needs to be excluded first and foremost.

Since this potential diagnosis is urgent, we will work any patient in for a “Rule Out DVT” exam on the same day as the request, and will also call the provider with results the same day.   As part of every lower extremity venous evaluation for deep vein thrombosis, we will also note any other pathology which might be contributing to the patient’s symptoms such as:

  • popliteal cysts
  • venous insufficiency
  • arterial pathology

This will provide you with all the information you need to formulate the best treatment plan. (order: Rule Out DVT)

Venous duplex is also accurate in diagnosing the cause of unexplained leg swelling.

Insufficiency in the deep or superficial veins can be identified and stratified in severity with color duplex scanning.  DVT can also be ruled out during this procedure.  So if you have a patient who has a more protracted history of leg swelling, a venous insufficiency duplex scan is the test of choice.

These exams can usually be performed within 24-48 hours of request and as per our protocol, results will be made available immediately upon completion. (order: Venous Insufficiency Study)
